By Richard Allsop, published 1/3/2010

There is a tendency for states to have large s*xy transport projects to capture the public's imagination.

This article seemed promising to begin with, but, around half-way through, turned into one pushing the ideological barrow of privatisation. This is somewhat reminiscent of that 4 Corners documentary of last year which blamed all of NSW's transport woes on unions who opposed the privatisation of electricity thereby supposedly cheating the NSW Government of the funds it claimed it needed to fix public transport (but the documentary avoided attacking 79%+ of the NSW public who shared the union's opposition to privatisation).

Privatisation of public transport has been disastrous for the public interest and all credible commentators are agreed on that and it is impossible to believe that Richard Alsopp could be unaware of that.

How on earth has the cramming of more customers onto Victoria's privatised public transport system, as a result of the Victorian Government's irresponsible encouragement of population growth, prove that a privatised system works better than a publicly owned system?

For years it has been costing Victorian taxpayers more than what it cost when it was government owned, and have got a far worse service in return.

Richard Allsop ignores Perth's trains. I think Perth's trains are the current stand out in urban passenger rail in Australia. They are spectacularly better than Brisbane and Sydney trains. And they are public trains. Richard may have his criticisms of Perth's trains, but I don't think he can just ignore them. Perth's trains show that with government commitment public trains can be very good.

We are the victims of faulty Philosophy ie; the development of Public Transport should be ongoing continuous smooth arriving at the future destination before the Real Estate developers do.
The costs should be born by the Taxpayer and All Passengers charged a standard not distance related charge of three dollars this way people can enter trains thru a turnstile no more MYKI farces no more queues labour transfered to the Train , conductors or safety officers ; our Country People would be advantaged ,people from Mildura and beyond could get reacquainted with their Capital City!
In the Computer age there is no reason why many people couldn't relocate to Kerang , Swan Hill or Mildura to take advantage of a much healthier lifestyle eg; no exhaust fumes , no mind numbing Traffic , no murders , cheap beautiful fresh fruit and Veg. It would be a big challenge to get people to move but thinking ahead because we must , if the jobs are available in the Country move we must , every family that moves can own an affordable Home , low Rates , lower food costs and that would be three cars off the freeway .

"Thus, a decent transport plan for NSW would propose privatisation of ferries, trains and buses. "
No evidence is given to support this assertion
