The Intergenerational Report - repackaged policy : Comments

By Scott Prasser, published 10/2/2010

Going by the latest Intergenerational Report, it suggests that in an election year real policy discussion is taken off the government's agenda.

No Government in this country has had the intestinal fortitude to plan ahead effectively. The problems caused by an aging baby boomer population, for example, has been known since the 1960's. Many have talked, no-one has acted. Now we are faced with a so-called 'crisis' which did not ever have to be a crisis.

So what is Kev's answer? Bring in a lot more people to pay tax to support the older population. Genius. Now who will pay for them in their old age? More immigrants?

Kevin the Populist and his band of merry men and women are way out of their depth on this one.

Well the BBs have definitely screwed my generation.
They got free university education based on academic performance, we got "uni for everyone" (150 per class in some cases) and then paid for it over the next decade.
They got pensions, we got "superannuation". Our version involved most of the first $10K or so stolen in fees, charges and insurance. (the law changed, but charging to keep and profit from your money is now acceptable), the politician's version involves getting more than they contribute...how is this not a pension?
They got a housing market based on supply/demand. We got a credit driven bubble US style lending and "first home buyers grants" that went straight to real estate agents.
They got a reduction in work hours to reflect the fact that *machines* make most of the wealth these days...We got the 40 hour week back because consultants get paid by the bum-hour and the work force is more "dog-eat-dog" than ever before.
The "grey ceiling" is stifling business management. Large orgs typically have 10 or more layers of "adult daycare" management that rides on the backs of the younger workers who operate the computers properly. Now they want to give the boomers tax breaks to keep the Grey Ceiling going for another decade!
Ever wonder whey they had to bribe people to have babies and buy houses? A hostile society is why!
I can't wait for the ageing crisis...maybe the silly buggers will allow our culture to move ahead.
