It's pretty sad when you think of the unfortunate things, accidents and errors of judgement that may befall us when we age. I guess all we can hope for is if we have enough common sense and/or judgement to realise our actions or lack of action might endanger either ourselves or other people, and in doing so, desist that behaviour. If not, then we hope those who're close to us will quietly take us aside and diplomatically (to avoid starting a quarrel) tell us what we're doing is hazardous or ill-advised, or both, especially the operation of M/Vs.
I know of some guys of my age, even older, who've told me categorically they'd never give up driving, even though their judgement is impaired. Their speed is hopelessly awry with the presiding traffic and road conditions at the time. As you said in your post, Paul, they more often than not drive far too slowly. And fail to keep up with the normal stream of traffic, which can cause other road users to take inordinate risks and attempt to overtake due to impatience.
