Seems that this thread is dead;
too many people using batteries.

Was talking to a local Green the other day and I remarked that winding the inherited clocks was a chore, she said to put them in the attic and get battery clocks.

Funny that I thought that wind up clocks were sustainable, non-polluting, eco-friendly devices.

Is Mise, in your petrol car why would you drive all the way out to the
back fence with the low petrol light lit ?

Ismise & Thinkabit,
If you think the change to electric cars has anything to do with
global warming you have not been taking any notice of the oil
companies and the motor manufacturers.
I suggest you study the finances of the major oil companies and their
costs of search and development and the bankruptcy of the oil fracking
companies.
Do you think it is co-incidence that Shell announces its study on how
to exit the oil industry and similar from BP and then a couple of
years later all the motor manufacturers start talking electric cars ?

Bazz, Why do you think that I think that the coming mass adoption of electric cars has to do with global warming?

It has everything to do economics. As I've already said, those that follow it know that in just a few years electric cars are most likely going to be cheaper than petrol (for the same sort of car) over the life of the car for average users.
It is already cheaper in some western countries for those that drive a lot such as taxi drivers. (eg: in London the "Black Cabs" are converting to electric with small petrol range extender generators. And this is due solely to it being cheaper for the owner/operator.)

And as I've pointed in the last post of mine, in Is Mise's scenario of remote cattle/sheep station properties it will be interesting to see how quickly they change to electric. Many (most?) remote properties already have solar power so they can potentially save considerably on energy costs for their vehicles because at the moment they have to truck their fuel in which is extremely expensive.

(PS: Over a *decade* ago I drove across the Nullabor and petrol at one of the roadhouses was more than $2/l and that's on the main highway. I shudder to think what they pay for a liter of fuel today at Is Mise's example of Rawlinna Station.)

Bazz,

"Is Mise, in your petrol car why would you drive all the way out to the back fence with the low petrol light lit ?"

I wouldn't but I can carry extra fuel to see me through any detours etc. also the motor doesn't rely on a product produced, in part, by child labour.
