All Hindsight stuff, had the Hawaiians been more enlightened they'd not have thought of him as a God either !
Indeed, the same goes for all cultures who were contacted, visited & let themselves get exploited by the more switched on ! Nowadays, the scene is reversed & look how the "underdog" merchants exploit the good will of those who admit the ignorant wrongs of their forebears !
