Heard on the News that run-off onto the GBR is attracting the "experts" again in blaming the old farmers.. Well, since the land is being cleared for all sorts of reasons, the soil is no longer able to absorb rain water & so, water does what water does best, run off ?
Now, farms are being plowed, planted, grazed on etc which leaves grass & other roots to absorb rain water, limiting run-off.
Supermarkets, Football stadiums, schools, parking lots & roads etc seal the surface & so, rainwater can no longer be absorbed & naturally enough, all water falling on such man-made infrastructure well, runs off into the sea which in turn is being polluted more.
nb. there's no science involved only a little logic which goes without saying to anyone with half-an ounce of common sense.

We need to collect such run-off & divert it beyond the GDR as much as possible. This will not only help for a healthier GBR but also will recharge the aquifer of inland Australia.
Run-off can be collected in high-end real estate canal developments & recreational lakes & windmills & solar pumps can push it west over the GDR via a Bradfield-type scheme that'll literally pay for iself & create employment & enhance the natural environment.
It can be done & if the "experts" can be kept away, it will be an all-round winner for all.

What else would you expect, it's coming up to grant time, & James Cook require a lot of money to pay their legal bill incurred trying to defend their last lot of lies about the death of the reef.

Hopefully the grants commission have heard about their lying, & will be a little less generous.

I'm waiting what they dream up next that is actually destroying the reef. First it was farmers, then GW & now back to the farmers.
What they don't won't anyone to know is how much polluted run-off from the roofs & carparks of their Universities cause.

Dear individual,

Poor old chap, you seem to have gotten yourself in such a flap old boy. There, there. Perhaps to calm your nerves we all accept that the university student are dumping tonnes of fertiliser on their rooftops and into their carparks in order that it flow out on to the GBR.

There, are you happy now old salt?

Steele Redux,
I'm happy for you that you find pollution so hilarious.

Doing something for the environment doesn't seem to be a sexy enough topic judging by this thread's responses.

Wrong individual, in fact we talk in threads about it all the time
And talk is all this country does
Some who never go near a beach or river sneer at our fears
But they are real
Mate drives a rubbish truck, got to know his work mates
They, if no one is around, tell of recycles being dumped every day, even collected in the one truck
Rubbish and recycled
Now we pay for plastic bags, they, [some times after one use] end up? in the land fill
On buying this place bought many truck loads of road base,to build driveway
Noticed it shined, glass, crushed glass cheaper than the gavel was mixed in it
No problem BUT owner of my landscape place bought another load
Noticed the glass canceled the buying of that gravel
Glass? buried in land fill now

Belly,
I had a conversation with a Council bloke & he told me that all this thing with Plastic in this bin, Glass in that one & other rubbish in the other bin, is all rubbish as it all gets mixed together & put into landfill.
From there it gradually seeps into underground water & disperses to a large degree. The pollution that is then measured in the ocean is then blamed on farmers.

I'm surprised how little interest there is in protecting the environment in comparison to the GW hype !

Indy,

not to make too much light of it, but whether GW or plastic bags, I think some people take too much notice of some other people.
In life, I find that not too many people use the 'relativity' part of their brain.
What I mean is, everything in life is relative, and I find that people overreact to way too many things because someone has exaggerated or sensationalised the thing they are trying to say, but they make it seem far more important or relative than it really is.
Then we get the naive and gullible, who have no life and decide that this is a bad thing and have found a 'good' cause to follow or push, that suddenly gives them a moment in the spotlight.
They are still no wiser about the things they are promoting, only that it sounds right and there is a lot of anecdotal evidence lying around to justify their stance.
Such as the plastic bag saga.
All those plastic bags washed up on the beaches, as seen on TV, were from the Asian countries North of us, and because of wind and ocean patterns they end up on our beaches.
So some morons decide there is something to be gained by banning plastic bags.
There is an overwhelming case for the need to take the decisions away from the public, including voting.
The public are too emotional, subjective and ignorant to be given the responsibility to make decisions.
Politicians love it, by pissing in the public's ear about how smart they are they suck the people in and the people vote for them, but based on what?
The public are just not capable of making rational, objective and responsible decisions.
The politicians certainly aren't, they only have 'self interest' in mind, to hell with the public.
So before you all get worked up about pollution again, stop and think, who is making money out of all this? because every time a bloody politician opens his mouth, it costs US more money!

ALTRAV,
What ? You mean we should prevent the non-thinkers from voting ? That'd be undemocratic & would spell the end of Leftism ! How terrible ! What would the Govt do with all the tax dollars not wasted ? Public servants would need to perform, unthinkable !
When do we start ?

plastic bags washed up on the beaches, as seen on TV, were from the Asian countries North of us,
Altrav,
Yes, I have observed that first hand in 'The Last Great Wildermess of Cape York'.
Another sobering experience was to travel over the trawling grounds after trawlers worked it all night. Some crews did not really appear to be too concerned what went over the side. Some recreational fishers too leave more than they take.
Another rather un-pretty sight from the helicopter was a famous replica sailing ship emptying its holding tank.
Human activity leaves its mark but to a basic, normal extent it's impact is absorbed by the environment. Where the environment is losing that ability is mass air travel, abuse of electricity, abuse of petroleum-based fuel, abuse of literally everyting humans are involved in. All that though is not the cause of any GW but it surely doesn't reduce it either. It also provides a great, apparent justifiable wasting of billions of Dollars going to people guessing about it all.
