Robert Mugabe STRIPPED of World Health Organisation 'goodwill' role following outcry
ROBERT Mugabe has had his goodwill ambassador status rescinded by the World Health Organisation after worldwide condemnation of the Zimbabwe regime.
The 93-year-old President of Zimbabwe is blamed for destroying his country's economy and numerous human rights abuses during his 37 years as leader.
His controversial appointment sparked outrage from world leaders after it was announced at a high-level meeting in Uruguay on Wednesday.
The outcry over the appointment has forced the WHO to back down and President Mugabe will no longer take up his role as a goodwill ambassador.
WHO director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement: “I have reflected on my appointment of H.E. President Robert Mugabe as WHO Goodwill Ambassador for NCDs in Africa. As a result I have decided to rescind the appointment.
“I have listened carefully to all who have expressed their concerns, and heard the different issues that they have raised.
“I have also consulted with the Government of Zimbabwe and we have concluded that this decision is in the best interests of the World Health Organisation.”
He added that the WHO would nonetheless need to work with “all countries and their leaders” - including President Mugabe in Zimbabwe - in order to fulfil its objective to build an international movement.
It comes after world leaders including the British government criticised the appointment.
