Need for Speed?

I read an interesting topic in our local newspaper today, it went something like this: Motorist caught in speed trap doing 230km/h.
This in our neck of the woods scares me a little, especially when the only division between you and on-coming traffic is a strip of paint approximately 3mm thick! This was a jaw dropping speed the guy was travelling at, can you imagine if someone travelling at the same speed as this guy and met head-on, you have a combined impact of 460km/h, do you guys have these idiots on your roads in Aus? Should they be banned for life?

Anyone who demonstrates a level of disrespect for the law to this extent and who is willing to gravely endanger himself and others needs to be put away for a long time. And then on top of a substantial jail sentence, should incur at least another ten years driving ban.

It basically comes down to two things; the bloody idiot element and the grossly inadequate policing regime.

The former is intractable, but there are many things that can be done to improve the latter. Please see my summary at http://forum.onlineopinion.com.au/thread.asp?article=2877#28184.

Ludwig, thanks...I went into your thread, It looks like post to yourself from yourself, or am I reading it incorrectly?

You are right though, the story goes on to reveal the age of the individual...18. Where are the authorities, in fact where are this guy's parents? Obviously part of his upbringing was to blame, the car (although not mentioned) could not have been anything short of a Ferrari, then again the cars available today in its smallest form are able to top 200. I think its time to look at the manufacturers, who are able to fit speed limiters to their cars.
The little bugger should be horse-whipped!
