Labor's energy policies: The heart of darkness

Last night (8 feb) South Australian homes plunged into darkness again as the electricity network managers were forced to load shed 40 000 homes to prevent the collapse of the network, with load shedding occurring again today for the same reason.

Instead of a Mea Culpa from the premier of the state to his suffering constituents, his reaction is to blame the network controllers and to intervene in its running (Like that's going to have a happy ending).

The bad news is that VIC, WA, QSD and federal labor intends to pursue the 50% renewables target that have brought such misery to South Australia.

Gas is wind but wind is not gas.

The SA premier is still blaming the previous Liberal government for selling off power generation to the private (Chinese) sector. Now, I also blame the stupid John Olsen, then premier, for doing a stupid thing. I'm all for private enterprise, but I firmly believe that essential services- utilities - MUST remain in government hands. Profits should not be allowed to interfere with energy and water. However, the dopey Labor party has one hell of a cheek to drag up the past. Come election time, they will have had 16 years to regain the power supply, but they have not done so.

But, perhaps the 'operator' has put the first nail in their coffin. The have, in effect, advised the public that their costs are more important to them than the actual job of supplying power. The decided not to bring another source online because it was cheaper FOR THEM to deny thousands of South Australians power in 40 degree heat.

The complete and absolute cock up of the South Australian power supply is the complete and sole responsibility of the South Australian labor government, who could not even keep up with demand with the full load of the interconnector.

"The operator said rolling blackouts across Adelaide on Wednesday evening were prompted by wind power dropping to 2.5 per cent of the state’s energy demand, putting strain on the Heywood interconnector between Victoria and South Australia operating “at full capacity”, and an unexpected spike in consumption after the working day.

A request for gas-fired Pelican Point to power up on Wednesday came too late for it generate power in time, leaving 90,000 homes experiencing blackouts as the market operator sought to reduce demand. While firing up the Pelican Point generator from a “cold start” takes up to six hours."

When Hazelwood closes, Victoria will suffer from an energy deficit, and will probably be forced to cut off SA and Tasmania to keep its own lights on.

the premier will be able to go and hold his head up high at the next gw fest. The High Priests will be very proud of him.

Dear Shadow Minister,

Oh bunkum.

There was certainly enough generation capacity in the system. The second gas plant at Pelican Point should have been operating and would have under government control. The only was for the government to mandate its operation is to declare a state of emergency.

What a completely warped system where the private providers are creating shortfalls in supply to boost prices. They made a killing over the last blackout.

Nationalise the bloody lot and get a national grid serving all Australians not just shareholders. But no, your lot will keep pissing about blaming renewables and avoiding any responsibility. make me sick.

A good night for the evangelists from the conservative side of SA politics I expect.

Wonder how many previous green blob voters made the decision to switch last night. All the intelligent ones of course, but probably quite a few of the brainwashed too I'll bet.

What utter hogwash.

The incompetent labor government was quite happy to see Pelican Point go to the wall as a result of "free" renewables making it impossible to run profitably.

Pelican Point is a high efficiency combined cycle gas generation plant that is designed to run as base load generator not as a peak clipping generator. As such the vast amount of time and energy to start and run the plant for a few hours (given the high cost and scarcity of gas) would make this generation the most expensive generation in the country.

The claim that government control would do it better is complete crap, as the AEMO works on well established formulae that the government owned systems also use.

The reality is that the super expensive wind farms that Labor used to replace coal and gas generators provided no power and the interconnector was insufficient.

The fault lies clearly at the feet of renewables and the incompetent labor government.

It's the overall costs, if gas was cheaper then it would have been used , no? The peak was a rare spike for which there was sufficient capacity with the gas. The rare bushfires cost because idiots don't cover SA in concrete but people pay tax, rates and insurance for trees. Everyday.

The string of breakdowns started with SA blacked out because the bendy power poles couldn't take a strong wind. That and the spread of the problem to the East coast had a common thread running through it - placing the country's energy security in the hands of greedy pigs in the private sector. Unless Labor wins the coming WA election the grip of Mr Greed on power supply will spread further with the planned sale of Western Power.

EJ,

The AEMO report made clear that the renewables were still connected, but were unable to ride out the faults on the network in the way that the gas generators were able to.
