Politics should guide or influence government policy that will lead to alleviation of existing maladies. But Politics today is doing the opposite. Politicians dictated by the same pseudo social values that rule the roost in communities make use of the social conditions to their advantage. Consequently the democracy is derailed. Education too has miserably failed in changing the political scenario.
Political parties employ strategies to hoodwink people especially the vulnerable and the gullible lower strata. Election manifesto with attractive promises, conducting grand political conferences using black money, use of audio-visual technologies to lure people, bribing the people to vote for them, blaming one another for all the ills seen, floating parties on casteist and communal lines, propaganda that confuse people, Inciting religious sentiments and polarising people on casteist and religious lines, employing star campaigners and glamorous cinema actresses and actors for canvassing are all evil strategies employed.
But an honest strategy for earning the patronage of the people in elections is not seen at all. Only people with bad antecedents win elections and go to parliament and assemblies to enjoy the perks and privileges. Honest persons are not attracted to contest elections as they feel that they are terrible misfits in the existing social scene.
Political strategists, with ulterior motives, use their oratorical skills, entice people and stealthily derail democracy. No programme be it educational, economic or social is implemented properly leading to wasteful expenditure. Even judiciary cannot escape from this rot. To make elections meaningful a clean strategy with no hidden agenda by political parties should be ensured.
Social change to make an honest society in which truth reigns supreme is the need of the hour. This alone can bring about a permanent and lasting impact on the elections which will usher in a true democracy.
Election commission and the Supreme Court can play positive role in this respect. Ensuring better elections is the onerous responsibility of the election commission. For this it needs more powers than what it has now. The Supreme Court should ably support the election commission in this endeavour
