I have to agree, Baird's reason for resigning is about as plausible as the excuse Tony Abbott gave the night he was rolled for the PM's job. "Reluctantly I am voluntarily resigning the Prime Ministership to devote my life to looking after my aged Grandma's vegi patch."

Mike could have put forward a number of more believable excuses such as;

"I was visited by space aliens who want to take me to the planet Zog to study my anatomy."

or "I am actually Elvis Presley, and I want to return to Nashville to resume my music career."

or "I am joining a band of travailing gypsies to become a juggler and fortune teller."

or "I applied for. and have been accepted, to joint the Soviet space program where I hope to become a cosmonaut and be only the second human being to visit the planet Zog."

The legitimate excuses are endless.
