No doubt the man belongs to a religion whose preachers would like to pretend they are "professionals" within society. The "professional" advice given this man should be investigated and the priest involved (possibly his entire church, if it turns out this is policy) should be charged with both professional negligence and fraudulently impersonating a genuine professional qualified to give advice on surgical matters.
More than one religious sect would come a cropper quickly.... Posted by Rusty Catheter, Sunday, 11 September 2016 4:23:32 PM

Of course, this says more about Australia and its gutless politicians and judiciary than than it says about Islam and the barbarity of its beliefs. We have always known that Muslims sexually mutilate females. So, why let such barbarians into our country? What the halfwit who handed down a 12 month suspended sentence has done is to advertise to the rest of the barbarians that it is OK to mutilate children because their religion exempts them from the severe punishment that would fall on anyone else if they did the same thing. There is one law for for about 98% of the population, and another law for people who came here, mostly illegally. How insane is that! The elite in Australia has willfully rejected our culture and values to pacify savages who should never have been here in the first place.

Compare the damage done to a person for an entire lifetime by FGM to that done by rape or even by kiddyfiddling, and adjust penalties for it accordingly. Other measures that would demonstrate that we give a tuppeny about human rights:
.abolish parole boards .legislate minimum 10 year sentences for domestic violence .same for non-domestic assault .stop importing anti-human "cultures" including Islam .amend 18C to ensure that it does not relate to any religion whatsoever (e.g. see http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2006/1/schedule and scroll down to 29J) Posted by EmperorJulian, Monday, 12 September 2016 11:53:52 AM

tbbn,
More misinformed crap. Sorry but female gential mutilation is not a uniquely Muslim practice, nor is it a religious one. It even predates the Abrahamic religions and is a cultural practice and is specifically banned in various Muslim countries as well as Christian ones. It is most prominent in African countries and in particular in ones with a prominent Catholic majority and was something Christian missionaries were trying to get rid of but still persists. Male genital mutilation (ie circumcision) is a specifically Jewish religious practice and was introduced into general Western society generally early in the 20th century as a result of the work of puritan Harvey Kellog who thought it would reduce the incidence of masturbation. If you want to target unnecessary misguided cruelty and disfigurement you should be looking closer to home. Posted by rache, Friday, 16 September 2016 9:42:32 AM

As Rache says. FGM is not a uniquely Moslem practice and it predates Islam. Any information on whether in this country, in this century, FGM correlates with any country of origin of the perps or any religious group?

"Male genital mutilation (ie circumcision) is a specifically Jewish religious practice"
also practiced by Muslims and the majority of male porn stars. Posted by Is Mise, Friday, 16 September 2016 12:49:46 PM

Rache,
While FGM may have had origins in non muslim cultures many centuries ago, the practise is almost exclusively practised by muslims predominately in Africa as yet another means of making women submissive. There is no excuse for this practise, and the attempted diversion to male circumcision is fatuous, as there is no reduction in sexual pleasure, and if anything a health benefit. While it's common in Somalia and Egypt it's also common in the prominently Christian countries of Eritrea (90% rate) and Ethiopia(75% rate) just to name a couple.
It's not and never has been an exclusively Muslim practice, it's not mentioned or condoned in any religious document and is also undertaken by members of animist religions in many countries and predates the Abrahamic religions. It's an illegal practice in several Muslim countries as well as Christian ones. As for making women submissive, the vast majority of the world's Muslims live in Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangla Desh and India and two of those countries oppressed their women so much they made a woman their leader. It's easy to generalise and extrapolate to take in vast numbers of people when you have an agenda. Posted by rache, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 3:46:44 PM

Is Mise,
That's my point. Male circumcision is a religious custom for Jews only but a cultural custom everywhere else. It serves no medical purpose and was based on the advice of a misguided zealot and has since become a tradition, particularly in most western countries. Female mutilation is even more misguided and has no religious basis whatsoever but is perpetuated in the same way. Posted by rache, Thursday, 22 September 2016 12:16:16 AM

Rache,
While the AMA found that there were medical benefits to male circumcision (while not enough to recommend as a standard practise) FGM has significant negative health impacts with regards infection and problematic child birth not to mention the complete removal of sexual pleasure. Comparing male circumcision to FGM is like comparing cutting your fingernails to amputating your hand. I guess that the comparison is just a diversion tactic. The baby had her clitoris removed and underwent labial fusion, which is Type 3 FGM and the most serious.
This abuse took place between February and March 2012 and was discovered after the mother took the child to a doctor on another matter. The doctor reported the FGM.

One wonders when the courts will start to take FGM seriously. With all the current talk about violence to women, this sentence is a complete joke.
