I have just read that Qld Politicians will recive massive pay increases. Can't do Newman gets an additional $70,000.-
Now if that is not utterly immoral then what is. Most people whose life these politicians "govern" don't earn that much in a year yet most of them do work which is vital but not considered so by the elite.
I have come to the conclusion that the ALP needed to go & now it's Newman's turn. He is failing this state miserably.

QLD with a 80 billion debt you would think they would be a little more restrained. Besides losing population they they are on track for far more debt in the next few years.

All I can say is that as one of his most staunch supporters in the far North I feel simply shafted by Newman's approach. I dearly do not wish the ALP back until by some genetic quirk they get some sense bred into them over the next few generations but the way this outfit is going isn't at all encouraging. Perhaps big Clive has more to offer in the field of fairness & integrity.

No integrity to be had, he is going to sell the state now. Big Joe wants it in a hurry, so he can cook the books and tell everyone how much they have to spend, before any sales take place. Now that is very smart.

While I agree the increases are excessive, don't forget it is an independent tribunal, just like the one that sets award wages, that sets the pollies salary.

I think the pollies salary is tied to that of judges, from memory. That being the case, it is probable the rise for MPs is incidental to giving our legal eagles more money. Where is the outcry that judges are overpaid by a greater factor than the MPs.

If the government wants to cut expenditure, & god knows they have to, I guess it is reasonable for them to cut this rise to something acceptable to the voters. For me it is more important to cut the cost of judges, there are a lot more of them to pay with these huge rises.

I'm waiting to see value for money with people who hang off our (taxpayers) apron & tell us to tighten our belts. I can't see any evidence of any competent managing in recent time that would warrant ANY pay increase at all let alone such an immoral amount as has just been made public.

It is some of the politicians who are overpaid not the job.

At least there is no upper house and nor should there be at State level. There is never enough money to pay drones like those Greens senators in Canberra.

Hasbeen,
yes of course, the very same people who are the "independent" tribunal now will then benefit from the "independent" tribunal made up of those who are the beneficiaries now. It's a mutual arrangement which does not permit input by true independents.

What is up for sale in QLD Electricity, about time they got on with it. Water, nothing is out of bounds, not even the health system. Joe wants the money, but he can give the state 15% as long as it is not used for debt reduction.

Joe wants the money,
579,
Yes he needs to cover for the immeasurable stuff-ups by your mates. Anyhow, the thread is about the immoral pay increases for Can't do & Co.
I expected better from the present Premier, I suppose the consolation is that one of the Nationals will get his job next time round.

You are going to foot the bill for newmans loose mouth as well.
Nothing set in concrete until they vote to accept the pay rise or not.
Do you remember the 4 % unemployment pledge, and all of that debt reduction. A belly full of gas. It hasn't worked out for Qld.

579,
No matter how poorly Newman performs, the ALP mismanagement has a far longer reaching negative effect. Just look what the Goaf did 40 years ago, we're still copping crap from that outfit. Newman will go but the Coalition will remain & gradually rectfy the ALP mess.
I recall that the Bligh/Beatty outfits did not knock their payrises back either. I recall drawing attention to that here on OLO. If the Coalition has an ounce of integrity & a wish to remain in power then they'll knock that payrise back.

But will they. Can you honestly see that happening, It's across the board as you said. QLD is not in a good position and it's not going to fix anything picking bits from here or there to make ends meet. Newman told endless lies to get in power and where is QLD now 80 billion in debt and rising. What he failed to tell the people before the election was they would have to sell everything to make what i say happen. Now Big Joe is on the game and state assets are not to go to debt reduction.
You are going to be in it over your head for quite some time to come.

I'm nothing short of amazed at the indifference of taxpayers to how their dollars are wasted. No wonder this sort of misappropriation can flourish. They only have themselves to blame.

579, I think QLD is in a strong position.

I say this because up until now, the CSG industry has been in building mode, with very little tax revenues for government other than pay roll taxes.

It is about to ramp up big time here, 2015 on whereby billions will flow to the qld government by way of royalties. Also, land owners will receive a fair splash as well, which in turn will inject funds into the private sector. The future here is quite bright.

Brisbane will be a good choice for investment in property in my view.

rehctub,
What is the anyicipated lifespan of that resource ? What percentage of the profits will need to be put aside for land rehabilitation & or, heaven forbid, unforseen disasters. All these will need to be paid for no matter what but will those who make the profits pay ? Something tells that won't be the case & it'll be us taxpayers who foot the bill as per usual with such grand schemes.
If Governments want to stimulate the economy then they should do by building infrastructure such as dams & flood canals & introduce a user pays system for all not just private enterprise & blue collar industries & put a salaies freeze on the public service as a whole for at least three terms of Government.

Indi, as for the life Spanish, it's a bit like how long is a piece of string. However, estimates are that the current gas pockets will last for at least 30 to 50 years, as most contracts with landowners (for compensation, not royalties) are fir thirty years, then, they are said to have located even larger pockets deeper than the current (400 to 700 meters) so who knows.

As for the clean up, there's not really much to clean up however I can assure you from first hand experience that the gas companies are forever improving their ways and they pay, not the tax payer. All the tax payer has to do is sit back and enjoy the royalties, as in this country the risk takers, those who own and service the land get squat for their resource, unlike the US.

I make no secrete that I am pro gas, but then again, I have also seen first hand what benefits, and problems, it brings and the fores outweigh the againsts, in my opinion.

The ones who will benefit the most are the uninvolved tax payers and residents in the cities.

rehctub,
what I'd like to know is what happens when the pressure that is holding everything up below ground, drops ? Will there be some grumbling & shaking of the ground ? Just a thought.
Anyhow, what do you think about the insane payrise for can't do & Co ?

Well, judging by the contributions maybe he is a Can-do after all. Can do as he pleases due to the apathy of constituents who can't see too much wrong with such payrises ? Perhaps a reflection of their own mentality ?
I suppose the bureaucrats are alright in their little lairs within the public service so why bother about some vital blue collar workers being laid off in favour of a few useless ALP cronies.
