The higher incidence of gallstones among women is probably related to our gender and our hormones. There is an increased risk of developing gallstones in pregnancy. One of the adverse effects of the oral contraceptive pill is an increased risk of gallstones. Combined Oral Contraceptives increase the secretion of cholic acid in bile and may worsen existing gall bladder disease. The risk is also there with HRT. Oestrogen is thought to be the hormone that is responsible for the increased risk, because increased risk was associated more with older COC's than with the more modern compounds (although the risk of DVT and clots is greater with more modern COC's.
