Quote "The government of Nauru wants Australia to give assurances that force will not be used on asylum seekers who are reluctant to be detained on the Pacific island."
This is absolutely stupid all anyone has to do now is say I do not want to go and sit down, force would have to be used to get them up and on a plane. Only a politician could come up with such a stupid Statement, hopefully the Government will be able to point out the sheer lunacy of such a condition.
Why do they think 90 police are going to be on the first plane with the refugees.

Government must have done something the first plane load of 40 from Sri Lanka have just taken off.
Trouble is they left the criminals who made the boat that rescued them come to Australia instead of where it was going to Singapore behind, they should have been first.
I will probably get called racist here but they took the easy ones the trouble will come with the Afghans, Pakistani's and Iraqi's.

runner - Regrettably for Australia, not soon enough.
We now have people using taxpayer funded lawyers to sue the Government which in essence is the taxpayer after all we will be the ones who end up paying the compensation.

TPV I agree but don't forget Labor want to appear to be doing something but in reality doing nothing.
We will have to wait for a new Government which will come in next election for the TPV.
But by that time we will have had thousands of MOSTLY men given residence visas.
At the moment we have the worst government in Australian history

<<There is no solution without Temporary Protection Visas.>>

And a GENUINE commitment to enforce them.

My concern about Temporary Protection Visas is that they may become just a way of putting the problem off till a later date

And once people settle in this country for any length of time it will difficult to return them. The refugee industry will see to that.

We only need to recall cases like that of : Minister of State for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs v Teoh
http://www.ags.gov.au/publications/agspubs/legalpubs/legalbriefings/br18.htm

Where in it was established that we were not able to expel a non-citizen who had been convicted of the importation and possession of heroin because it might adversely impact on his children.

The main prerequisite for effective border control is BACKBONE.

<< tired of incompetence. Election is coming soon. >>

Yeah but runner, we won’t have a choice between incompetence and competence!

.

<< At the moment we have the worst government in Australian history >>

Yep Philip.

But after the next election we’ll have the second worst government in our history, with just one real improvement – a genuine concerted effort to stop the boats.

.

<< And a GENUINE commitment to enforce them. >>

That’s a good point SPQR. There is a big difference between a government saying that they’ll implement TPVs and them making it apply to the vast majority of asylum seekers.

Turkey is having a problem with about 200,000 Syrian war refugees, they are looking for a very large island in the Pacific for some off shore processing. Any ideas? P/s New Zealand is too small.
