After years where the unions have monopoly rights over sectors of business, no accountability to their members and no fiduciary responsibility, the surprise is not that the HSU funds were looted, but that it hasn't been discovered more frequently.
The FWA is clearly incapable of meeting the oversight responsibilities of the unions, and should be relieved of this task. The question is then who should shine the light into these shady practices. For me the answer is clear, Unions should have the same reporting and regulatory compliance responsibilities that companies have, and be overseen by the same bodies. The union members deserve the assurance that their funds are being used for their betterment, not a flash life style for the union bosses.
Labor is beholden to the union bosses and their patronage, and is unlikely to do anything to cut the perks of those that put them in power.
