http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXFUUGeV1DI The title of Anne's article was 'A Glowing Report on Radiation.'

On the other side of the debate is Australia's Dr Helen Caldicott who sees Fukishima as being the greatest health hazard we are facing with the exception of an all out nuclear war.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMXvpWoHzeE&feature=share Helen says Fukushima is many times worse than Chernobyl. In Fallujia,Iraq, 80% of women were having children with birth defects due to the use of USA depleted uranium. It is estimated that 1 million people have died from cancer as a result of Chernobyl.

Do you think the popular media are down playing the gravity of Fukushima? Radiation is a silent long term killer so the waters are easily muddied as to the cause.Do the public have the right to know the truth,or could the panic be worse than the radiation?

I think, it is definitely possible, that the threat of nuclear contamination is being under played here (about Fukushima) Arjay.

Dr Helen Caldicott makes a compelling case in your link, whilst conversely the case put by, the American columnist Anne Coulter, scares the pants off me in it's brazen flaunting of the truth and reality.

I didn't know deniers could be so flagrant.

Thinker, people have yet to realise the consequences of Fukushima. When people in the Northern Hemisphere realise how poisoned their food will become, this will force up our food prices here since the Southern Hemisphere will have much cleaner food.None of our Govts have a clue or even a plan to combat this. They constantly take advice from private self interest groups and act accordingly.

The standard retailed geiger counter will not pick up the most dangerous radiation,ie apha particles that mimic other compounds in our bodies and stay with us for years. What must happen is the origin of all food be labelled by our retailers.I did not know that Turkey eg.was so contaminated from Chernobyl.

Our food security should be top priority but don't expect either of our major parties to be aware or have a plan. There are no guarantees. It is all a matter of chance.A few particles of plutonium could land here and you be one out of a million to get cancer in 5 yrs.It all depends upon weather and ocean currents. The pacific ocean will be heavily polluted,so will the govt do checks on alpha particle contamination at the Fish Markets? They won't because they can't be held accountable.

Anne Coulter gives a whole new dimension to the concept of the blond ,bimbo immediate self gratification. This is an obivious attempt to placate the fears of the US/Canadian people who are copping the brunt of Japanese nuke fallout.

Poetic justice for some but it was the elites in the USA who unnesessarily nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Most of the public will never realise the truth but will unwittingly suffer the consequences.Dr Helen Caldicott knows the reality that we will continue to ignore.

Radiation is a silent long term killer ....
So is continued stupidity after attention had been drawn to much ignorance.
If we are so greatly sorry, deeply (catchcry) concerned about all this then why on bloody earth aren't so many not doing anything positive like reduce consumption in general. Reduce that & we'll do away with a need for more energy. How much simpler can it get ?
We could have good, clean nuclear energy at a very safe level if we weren't so damn bloody demanding. More small easily controllable power stations rather than few huge ones which can't be controlled once the throttles are open. It's all due to the mindless masses of consumers why everything we build is of enormous, faster, higher capacity proportion. When will we put a stop to this idiotic more growth mentality. By all means keep developing technology but not to feed demand only to provide need.

Individual,I will never say no to new technology.Fukushima should never have happened.Everything they did was wrong from location, design ,procedure, safety, wrong fuel and storing 40 yrs of waste within a reactor.Nuke technology can be safe with the right technology and safe guards. It must not be closed in corporate secrecy.

I think the heading of this post testifies to the fact that the American media is far from the freedom proposed in their own 1st ? Constitutional Amendment.

Is the format of allowing someone like Anne Coulter, to carry on misinforming un-oppossed or without alternative views, healthy for public viewing.
I don't think it is.

When it comes to something of such public importance as a nuclear contamination event,
the bimbonic view should perhaps take a back seat in the public interest.

What is happening at Fukushima ?. I would really like to know.

thinker2,
An earthquake happened at a huge nuclear plant. The plant is so big that they're now having a problem holding it together. They have had nuclear ships for decades now with no major problems. Some of nuclear ship technology is now 50 years old & still going. So, what does that tell us ? Keep the plants at a manageable size, that's what it's telling us. Like everything else, if you don't go overboard you won't get wet. Simple. In earthquake-prone area you could build floating power stations i.e. build them on land but do not fix them to the ground.
Someone who knows something about nuclear power could perhaps provide some info.

Individual, thinker 2 means;what is the severity of the situation and what are they doing to clean it up? Very little it seems.Chernobly was being buried in concrete well before Fukushima got this stage. The media is strangely quiet. Many of these poisons have half lives of millions of years.

what is the severity of the situation.
Arjay,
i'm fully aware of the gist. My gist was to point at this nonsense of big. Big ships, big planes, big power stations etc. Things are made so big that they became unmanageable & these creations are now biting us in the ar$e. What it also tells us is that no-one learnt anything from Chernobyl. The very smart scientists who design those plants weren't wise enough to take heed after Chernobyl. When it comes to satisfying consumer demand & big corporation ego nothing matters, not even nuclear dangers. The bosses aren't the ones getting nuked, they're sitting somewhere safe on piles (literally that is) of money made via extreme exploitation. Their only regret is the loss of revenue not the lives of people.

Individual,I agree with you.We are not at cross purposes. It is an absolute catastrophe, but we should not write off nuclear power in the future with better technology and safe guards.

Even in the light of our present technology they did everything wrong. It was a total stuff up!We should not be using uranium for a start. They use uranium because plutonium can be onsold to the nuke industry. The USA is using depleted uranium in conventional weaponery. This is criminal. It is all about power and money.Thorium is far safer.
