For those that made it to our shores and did not perish on the high seas, Julia Gillard has announced a new strategy for dealing with the issue. More magistrates, judges and lawyers to process their claims at $billions p.a.

This solution is akin to building more coffins to deal with an epidemic.

We need to treat the problem, not the symptoms.

Stop the boats.

More judges and lawyers - what a joke. It is law firms that push out the length of these cases when governments have already finalised their investigations. Longer cases means more money for private law firms. It is repeating the mistakes in the insulation scheme with very little forethought.

Yes the cases should be dealt with quickly but it is not a bottomless pit of money and the processes should be shorter and include a no tolerance for lack of identity papers for those who have not travelled directly from an area of civil unrest and in many cases have flown safely into Indonesia and lived there for some months before making the journey across water.

Genuine refugee cases are being stockpiled so where is the humanitarian approach? It is understandable why people would want to emigrate to Australia but exploiting goodwill in the UN Convention is not the way to go and only adds to the hardships of those in genuine need.

Gillard is not close to getting it right.
Abbott too is far from an answer.
Some place middle ground could be found if we all stopped defending our teams views.
Lets look at these points, xenophobic or not some ,me too are unsure we will prosper by these migrants.
Yes I doubt some can blend in.
And despite my view Shadow Minister farms for things to heave at Labor, deaths now but not during his teams time in office, for one,a lie.
Deaths will increase, I am concerned at my mum and dad are on the next boat storys.
I understand truly do, a great and increasing number are sick of both sides migration policy's.
And Labor suffers more than its gains by being seen as soft.
The INTERNATIONAL refugee problem is growing.
We must confront that, and just maybe our poet has posted the first thing I ever found interesting,we should look to fixing this at home, their home.
UN what a silly name for such a dysfunctional thing, make it work ,make it fix problems.
Or we can put our head between our knees blame Australia's ALP and forget it is a world wide concern.
See you in your next thread SM.

Belly:>> Gillard is not close to getting it right.
Abbott too is far from an answer.<<

That is not so Belly, Abbott said" future coalition government would return to a Pacific Solution-type arrangement to deal with asylum seekers, which detained asylum seekers at camps on Manus Island and Nauru".

It was a solution that worked then and it would start working tomorrow if implemented again.

When the boats started coming during the Howard years every boat got front page status in the papers. One arrived today as usual; they pasted it in three column inches on page one million of the daily. Those lefty journalists are a disgrace, bloody kids overboard got weeks worth while the dead on Xmas Island are dead and forgotten within days by the lefty press.

Just a comment on Gillard not close to getting it right, what has she as an integral part of this and the last government ever gotten right. Pink batts, solar rebate, BER farce, Grocery watch, Petrol watch, and the broadband that they will not tell us about will certainly not be right.

Her latest is the totally rhetorical response to the floods. She should have pledged one billion to help from day one. She gave Muslim schools in Indonesia $550 MILLION two months ago, just like that, not a problem, thanks for taking it Indonesia.

There is a telethon for the flood victims tonight, thank god for that. They are going to need it with Gillard and Bligh’s ineptitude running the show.

/// Treat the cause not the effect ///

This is the latest smart arse quip that is doing the rounds.

What is, “the cause”?

If you are a true believer and swallow the line that most who land on our shores are poor souls escaping persecution. How do you remove the offending regimes, especially when, each an every time Western powers become involved in a such, they are roundly blamed for being “the cause ”?

If you, like me, believe that most who land on our shores are economic migrants. How do you solve famine & squalor driven by overpopulation and bad management, when you have no mandate to impose birth control or sound economic policy.(and lets not overlook the fact that we already give away $billons each years towards that end!)

No, for my money, it’s far, far easier to stop the boats, than “Treat the cause” .

How to stop the boats?

Simple.

Just make Tony Abbott PM and magically everything will be fixed - refugees, interest rates, wars, hospitals, budget deficits - even floods.

Whilst there is no perfect solution to the boats, it is clear that the ALP's change in the policy is a huge step in the wrong direction.

Whilst the supporters of the ALP policy might like to kid themselves that the 5-10% increase in refugees world wide lead to the sudden 5000% increase in boat arrivals, most of us aren't that stupid.

Australia takes about 13500 refugees a year. In 2010 nearly half of these in 2010 came from the cashed up boat people. Many of whom flew to Indonesia to hop on a boat.

The question of whom we accept and on what criteria is being decided by the smugglers based on who can pay.
