And so a young woman's life was thrown into turmoil. The only saviour being a cynically tearful public apology. Who can resist a pretty girl crying?
Well, I don't want an apology. This new invention Twitter has shown itself to be immensely useful. Finally, we have found a tiny worm hole into the actual people behind the PR spin. Something real, something authentic.
In case you haven't seen this all before, it goes something like this...
Young and Foolish athlete exposes a 140 character unsanitised piece of the person within, with all the beautiful human flaws, and with real opinions. Someone, somewhere finds what they have said offensive. The wheels of outrage are set in motion..
Wham, bang, representatives from whatever minority or special interest group explode out of the blocks for the free PR. The meeja grant them a voice, the outrage itself becomes the news, sponsorships are lost, role models are castigated and the press conference ceremony of repentance closes proceedings.
It's all explained well here

I cant say I don't enjoy the show, but what I really love about it all is that in that 140 character quote that sets the wheels in motion, we get to see something pure and unfiltered. Even if that pure and unfiltered tid-bit is offensive to some.
Authentic racism, sexism, homophobia, bitterness and spite, jokes in bad taste, I'll take it all over the meandering press releases and interviews telling us all that "We're taking it one game at a time' or 'I'll go back and work even harder on my game and hope the selectors notice'.
It also comforts me at night that I may not drive a Jaguar, but I can tweet crap to my friends without having to apologise to the world in a tearful press conference because I fear losing more than my Jag.
