Ken Talbot who tragically died in a plane crash recently. Now there was a father. Let's just hope for his childrens' sake the hangers-on don't get an opportunity to steal his wealth.

Mr Talbot's children will have to prove they can run a company - and they are not alcoholics - to access their inheritance.

The billionaire's will states that when they turn 30, his son Liam and daughters Courtney, Alexandra and Claudia should "obtain written confirmation from three independent doctors that they are not alcoholics or drug users".

Individual, at face value it seems a reasonable caveat designed to direct his children’s behavior, for half of their productive lives, then they are on their own.

Another scenario may be it is the company and not the children he is protecting. Into the grave he is assured that what he built does not fall quickly through substance abuse. I would expect that he included provisions that would not see the kids destitute until they hit 30, but he denies them ownership until half their life is over. There is more to it than is on the face of it re it being a selfish act rather than one of parental consideration.

Will they have to show that they won't bribe government ministers to get their way?

Whereas in the ALP it's assumed that Government Ministers are simply creations of the Party and can be removed at any time by a few people in a back room.

Much better...

Individual, I read that story too. Many of the very wealthy have taken similar tacks. Warren Buffett has made a point of giving away all but a fraction of his wealth, Bill Gates ditto, Carnegie did the same. One has only to look at Jamie Packer to see the wisdom in this...

Maybe I'm just getting too old, or too cynical (or both), but my first thought when I read that the kids should...

>>"obtain written confirmation from three independent doctors that they are not alcoholics or drug users"<

was, "I wonder how much that would cost".

Maybe it's just Monday morning.

My first thought that they'll probably just find some amenable quacks and bribe them.

I think there's probably more to this than meets the eye. I don't think any of us can draw "accurate" conclusions one way or the other, because we don't know "all" the facts.
