It is quite possible that we are more vulnerable to cyber terrorism via hacking of important sites particularly defence and economic. We are more and more dependent on information (and money) being stored, transacted and transferred on the Net. I don't see this as resulting in greater internet censorship as hacking has been around for years, so has terrorism. Hacking has been a threat since the 60s although it started primarily with telecommunications. The threat is real however, you only have to look at the rise in IT security companies who manage firewalls on behalf of government and private clients. Most government departments now employ IT security experts as well as the usual security advisers. Whether or not Al Quaida's expertise can compete with preventative measures remains to be seen. Governments and other agencies now often use trusted information sharing networks that are separate from other networks (as I understand it). Internet censorship won't stop hacking. Yep- anyone with an ounce of understanding about computers and the internet (which excludes the majority of people in most countries of the world) would know that censoring makes zero impact on hackers as it is still the same system.
It would be like trying to stop a burglar by covering your windows with curtains saying "do not enter". Anyway, a few points about the internet etc: -Most sensitive computers are safe from hacking because they are not connected to the net at all (NASA learned that the hard way a few decades ago) -It is simply impossible to destroy the internet with EMPs because the 'internet' is simply the name for every computer and every transmitter connected together- even if it did, it would just be a matter of fixing the wires and buying a new computer. -An EMP nuclear device?!?! ALL nuclear weapons discharge an EMP- it's just that I'd be more worried about the extreme heat, gigaton explosive force and radiation. Posted by King Hazza, Sunday, 21 March 2010 3:29:23 PM

That's probably a smart move, if you think about it.
>>We see a lot of high ranking public officials giving an opinion but not one internet expert.<< If I had a bunch of "internet experts" advising me on how to counter the threats, I'd make sure they kept very quiet about it. Posted by Pericles, Sunday, 21 March 2010 5:10:48 PM

If you look at a few excerpts from these scenarios,it is all hype and alarm without any real factural evidence. They all agree that there needs to be new powers over the net to stop such attacks.
King Hazza you have observed that EMP has always been a by product of any Nuke explosion, why has FEMA over stated it's influence? One bomb would never achieve anywhere near this effect.Iran has yet to develop a single nuke bomb and has not the capacity to deliver while Israel has estimated no of 100 plus. Pelican I agree that censorship won't stop hacking, but in the scenarios revealed here they want new powers over the WEB.What are they? Pericles, you can have expert advice that is convincing without giving away any trade secrets. When was the last time you believed a polly or bureaucrat? The internet did not take off until 1998 which gave people access to information not supplied by the pop media. The corp media has been reduced from 30 to just 4 in the West. This is not healthy.Due to the WEB people, are now questioning many things that the establishment feeds us and they don't like it. Govts around the planet want control.Kevin Rudd currently wants to censor the WEB under the pretense of protecting us from paedophiles. Do not take our present freedoms for granted. Our elected officials need their feet to be held to the flame of truth if we are are to keep this precious tool. Agreed Arjay and Pericles:
I actually see an interesting race forming here- technologically-illiterate pollies trying vainly to censor the net vs the vaguely more netsavy voting public getting around to using Google on political issues and parties. At the moment I'd say media influences on politics are way too ingrained in most of the current generations, and loutish neo-conservative pollies remaining in government for either side to make a substantial move. I'm not too scared of our woefully incompetent governments actually pulling anything off, yet the prospect that our parties would so enthusiastically embrace what are arguably fascist policies on flimsy pretenses each easily disproved- and are being happily tolerated by Australians- does not help me relax much. King Hazza.I think we are headed for war and we can stop it if enough people become aware.Israel is trying to find reasons to attack Iran. The US Govt to my surprise is now trying to get Israel to behave.
Perhaps the Obama admin is beginning to wake up. If Israel does initiate war with Iran, then the entire Middle East could errupt. This conflict has been spurred on by peak oil.Iran will not be as easy as Iraq. The price of oil will reach undreamt of heights which will mean more economic hardship and reduction in economic growth. The internet is a powerful tool that can stop wars for profit. Posted by Arjay, Monday, 22 March 2010 10:03:32 PM

I took a peep at "GNN" but unfortunately Umurikins have no idea how to pull off satire as they really don't understand what satire actually IS, so I didn't think it very funny.
Now the kings of satire are the Brits and there is a book called Rule #1 by Rupert Morgan which is a very clever satire on Y2K, 9/11 and the stupidity of Bush and the Umurikin people. Oh yeah, same theme, Rule #1 says "always keep the people in a state of fear" Posted by Divorce Doctor, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 10:24:35 AM

Yes Divorce Dr."Cyber Shockwave" was the underlying theme.Remember "Shock and Awe" Weapons of mass destruction in Iraq that did not exist.Terror, terror, terror was everywhere. It was an undefined enemy to premote indefinite wars for profit.
Over 60,000 of US soldiers seriously injured or wounded.Over one million Iraqis dead and millions suffering from injuries or poverty. Now we were have birth defects from depleted uranium bullets. You won't hear about this is the pop media. They really are disgusting. yes but what is your point?
IMHO it was a very poor and bad taste attempt at satire Posted by Divorce Doctor, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 6:56:13 PM

Now that I have had time to go through it, it is crystal clear that the entire exercise "Cyber Shockwave" was designed to generate a groundswell of support for the proposition that "the internet" should come under government control.
As such, it was a cynical exploitation of everyone's fear of the unknown, as precursor to public approval for government action to "protect the American people". Come to think of it, it could be the product of a think-tank organized and run by the secret cabal of elites we keep hearing about. Super-scary. Posted by Pericles, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 7:23:31 PM

Divorce Dr;this was no satire. This is the reality.

OK, that's what I was trying to establish and it is now clear
It is the good old Congoline of Suckholes as described by Mark Latham and you are totally sucked up, rendered even BELOW the ignoramus level of the amurikin people that this crud is aimed at. Wait a moment, I went out last night with my binoculars and yes there were some things in the sky marked MPNB WMD Certified D Rumsfeld.
They were circulating just above the layer of pigs. I'm comfortable [as they say in Umuiker] that as long as the pigs are flying then I am protected Posted by Divorce Doctor, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 10:28:23 AM

Divorce Dr; you have gone off half cocked. There is no reason in your tirade. If you had the capacity to read between the lines ,you would have realised that I was alluding to the reality that this so called new threat was just another BS front like the war on terror.
I don't think you read it very well. Posted by Arjay, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 4:42:31 PM

Recently a friend of mine returned form the USA and she said that the people there are paranoid about Iran having a magnetic, pulse nuclear bomb which FEMA says could knock out all communications in the USA.These to me seem to be wild claims.
With Google threatening to pull out of China cyber wars seem on the agenda.Google takes the high moral ground and we all know that China get google to censor their internet but Google also to a much lesser degree does this on the behalf of the US Govt.
Now the threat has moved to home grown terrorism. Is it possible for one hacker or a number of them to disable the entire internet? Obama talks about weapons of mass disruption.Apparently Obama's own site was hacked into.
I see this as a move to internet censorship on a massive scale. We see a lot of high ranking public officials giving an opinion but not one internet expert.
