ENVIRONMENTALISTS fear a policy to find a new water source for Cairns will be accepted before the Federal Government approves a draft environmental plan.

Cairns is running out of water from its main supplies at Copperlode Falls Dam and Behana Creek and could reach unsafe yield levels, of below 40 per cent, as soon as 2011.

Don't worry Teresa when the greens have their way and close down agriculture because it is reported By the greens to be killing the Great Barrier Reef you will have all the water from Tinaroo and if that is not enough you can always drink recycled sewage as Anna Bligh recomends . Then we will only have to worry where we outsauce our food. Every local source will be banned or off limits.

You know who is to blame Teresa – mad-arsed politicians that promote rapid population growth with no end in sight….politicians that are beholden to real-estate and other big business vested interests and not interested in sustainability.

Cairns isn’t gonna stop growing any time soon. There won’t be any thought as to what the ideal population might be for this region, considering the impact on environment and lifestyle and the resource base that is needed to support it. It’ll just be full steam ahead.

In fact it will accelerate as growth in the overcrowded southeast corner of Queensland is progressively redirected to Cairns and other towns all the way up the coast.

No matter how desperate the water supply situation might get in Cairns, you can bet your bottom dollar that NO effort will be made to stop or even slow the ever-increasing size of the population and hence the primary factor in the ever-increasing rate of water usage.

All local residents will have to pay more for their water, suffer tighter restrictions and worry more about security of supply.

And so it is in this wonderfully antisustainability-oriented state, and indeed right across the country.

Actually, Cowboy Joe, most people who migrate to Queensland do so from other parts of Australia. Ludwig's correct though - the mentality in Qld is that more people = more development = more $$$.

Unfortunately, this seems to be a policy subscribed to equally by Labor and the Coaliition. Only the Greens argue in the political arena against ongoing unsustainable 'development', without much success in that part of the world, I'm afraid.
