Hmmm... Just build huge multistory highrisers in the inner city & have everyone live in an urban concrete jungle. That would cut the costs of all the infrastructure. Water, Electricity. There would be no need for roads. We could have waterslides to get from one place to another. (if we had the water) A good idea would be to close down anywhere outside the St East corner of Queensland Then move everybody into the multistory highrises. Like Singapore.NOT

Gibo, I can see where you are coming from. Yes, it's all a military conspiriosy. ;-)

We all know that anywhere outside of the Sydney/Melbourne/Canberra circle is Terra Nullus anyway so no money for infrastructure should be spent anywhere but within that circle. ;-(

Kevin Rudd does not have a clue.
It cannot be ignorance, it must be stupidity.
On the ABC TV Saturday night he was spading the start of a new freeway
in Melbourne. He said how we needed to build more freeways.

Where has he been this last few years ?

Everyone but everyone knows that what is needed is more rail capability.

Likewise a second airport for Sydney is on the planning again.
Great, they will get it finished just in time not to need it.
Airlines around the world are cutting back on services and merging
as fast as they can. Are these people as stupid as they appear to be ?
Christine Milne told them in parliament this last week which way is up.
I hardly ever agree with what she says, but she has it right this time.

Arrrrgggghhhh: and we elected these dills !

ludwig you forget how much minning revenue lifted out of our pocketts with the fuel levy we had to have

you know that fuel levy that lock steps our unleaded price to some fictional super unleaded grade in singapure

you know how fuel prices were up [well that fuel levy is supposed to pay for road stuff[yeah i know a lot of it isnt ,but then hey you rake hay when the sun shines [and petrol levey is reaping in a huge windfall
[oops sorry the mining boom] has really boosted the bottum line

so road building tax re-funds all round

and still qld is revenue raising off the auto cash cow[shouldnt have sold off electricity and water eh ms bligh][and the nationals are just lolly gaging waiting in the wings ,

darn how can we get back our lost govt arm[one house is unconstitutional]how was beatie allowed to hide so much of the constitution under act 70 of 2002[read the addendum]govt does as it choses[just pay up and be still, while the lawyers we elected to govern us do as they chose

Yes, I totally agree with you, Ludwig. They might be an improvement on the former mob, but Rudd and Co don't really understand sustainability.

As pointed out by Pelican, the emphasis should be on both light and heavy rail, rather than simply building more of yesterday's highways and freeways.

They've also missed a great opportunity to make some real inroads into easing people towards more sustainable housing and transport choices with this week's ten billion dollar give-away, most of which will just be frittered away in more of the same old carbon intensive and wasteful consumption.

It's also starting to look fairly obvious that the emissions targets they're going to announce next week won't be nearly high enough.

No, I don't think much of Rudd's nation building choices. We need a lot more imagination and innovation than he's shown so far.

Bronwyn, I’m not so sure that Rudd is any better than Howard. I’m fast getting the feeling that he’s a lot worse. His good initiatives just pale into insignificance compared to his terribly anti-environmental and future-destroying basic paradigm.

I’ve continued this sort of discussion with a somewhat different focus in a new general thread; http://forum.onlineopinion.com.au/thread.asp?discussion=2372
