As you get older, I am taking a punt you are young, you will understand some but never all about them.
I once may have asked the same questions, may I answer my own question of some 40 years ago now?
No conspiracy exists they indeed are meant to work for our country.
It is true both side of politics in power divert them and miss use them.
Files exist on many of us, me once maybe still, for just being anti conservative.
Oh well to be fair I questioned a governor generals parents wedding.
Blundering along more often than not its hard to take them, the office of national assessment, and keystone cops, sorry federal police seriously .
But we are unlikely to be herded into a sports Field and shot any time soon as in Chile.
Not CIA either they mostly try to get it right not make the story fit the wanted directions , we are safe with our current government.

Australia needs ASIO to protect all its interests. It needs to work in secret for obvious reasons. What we don't want is the AFP nor the state police forces to have "special powers". I would hope the pysch. profile of an ASIO agent one of an analyst, not a criminal/gang member, as is said of the police.

Had someone taken out Hitler, Stalin and Hirohito in the 1930s, the world have suffered less.

asio works for govt
overseeing govt
[and industry
for their masters [the people]

generic use of people [rather than specific people]

as a body teqnically under the CON stitution [it is charged . as is govt , to the well being and protection of the people and their common WEALTH]

active treason prevention should be its mission
[like selling off govt services and public resources,
and non performance of govt duties
[like police corruption, medical malfeasance ,
[ie securing the means of the people to govt protections [not systamised oppressions]

asio [should /could be] the intel of the fed police who should be doing the enforcement and oversight , of our internal threats,to the peoples safety and well being

but asio is MEANT to serve the people not political or multi-juristictional crime syndicates and their colluded and treasonous [self serving] adjendas.

anyhow it will be interesting to hear what an asio troll thinks their role to be

[i have met many under cover at protests [against big buisness abuses],
so possably somehow the autocrats have subverted asio from its constituted mission and duties ,into a mutual advantage sharing the spoils with insider knowlewdge ,

active and ongoing treasons and no holding to account

[and seemingly a complete ability to follow the massive ammounts of currency floating out of the economy , proceeds of crime by the foreign drug cartels ran by the cia

[is asio the sub office to its central intel agency
and its secret financing operation
via drug intra national marketing?]

who knows

[ps im already on file ]

doesn't matter who it works for, it certainly doesn't work for you. so keep your head down, say only approved thoughts, about footy or cricket in season, and you'll be ok. unless it's more convenient to feed you into the chipper

ULTIMATELY... I think it works for the preservation of the established order which in turn is a creation of powerful elites.

It is in their interests to prevent any sedition, or threat to that economic and political control they exercise.

So... ASIO works for all, but within the framework of those with the power.

Who can say this is a good or bad thing? Those complaining the loudest would most likely quickly appoint their own equivalent and use it for the same reasons.. so.. se la vi.

Intelligence agencies ultimately act in our interest and work for 'us' through the government of the day. ASIO is another agency within the public service.

As Poly rightly stated, the established order whatever that may be usually dictates what is defined by sedition - generally in the West where democracy prevails (in the broad sense) attempts to overthrow a government by force would be sedition.

The most time consuming focus in the present day is that of terrorism (ie. acts of politically motivated violence).

The world is what it is and ASIO works to protect its government and its citizens along with the AFP, DIGO, DIO, ASIS and DSD who all play a role.

I am not sure why it has become a national sport to invent conspiracy theories about intelligence agencies. This does not mean of course, that intelligence agencies should have limitless powers and in Australia they don't for the most part. Although the new terrorism legislation was completely unnecessary given our more than adequate conspiracy laws.

It is the politicians who might make use of the intelligence agencies for their own political gain that is of more concern.

It concerns me that on issues of significance that these "agencies" do not seem to have the spine to speak contrary to the politicians.

Case in point - East Timor.

Now, "we" knew well in advance that war criminals from Jakarta were going to issue spiteful orders of mass slaughter.

We could have saved a lot of people, but the agencies aquiesced to howard and his child abusing mates, constituting in my view a form of corruption.

Quote the Bad Vorlon:
" ... !FAILED! ... "

And now, as of last time I was in Jawa, u get to see a mega huge poster of wiranto upon arrival. Now what in the world makes u think that the likes of Amrozi will ever respect life if u do not speak out openly against the butchers who run the place?

I am in favor of a conscience vote available at all times for all our executive personell.

And if they're too chicken to stand and b counted when it counts most, then I agree with Bush Turkey, in that they don't deserve to have *Raptors*

In our darkest hour, may the Light within burn bright enough to save our friends and families from themSelves.
