that people seem to expect
that they can just say ‘that is bull’
without any kind of logical refutation
and have it accepted as 'valid criticism'
murder is also a sensitive topic
and very distressing for family members involved
it is however fully reported
and if you look at what is reported
it is very clear that upsetting people
is the least of media’s concerns
eg paparazzi houndings
as for non-newsworthy
have you had a look at the news lately?
newsworthiness is obviously not a factor
in the great bulk of what gets reported
I chose suicide because its non-reporting
actually helps avoid dealing with it
again domestic violence is very disturbing
but it was by bringing it out into the open
that we began to deal with it as a social issue
not by turning a blind eye to it
as we have done with suicide
my proposition is that the society
just doesn’t want to deal with the issues
that suicide raises
and the media is complicit in that avoidance
particularly the society
avoids it because of the disproportionate number
of indigenous australians
who end their own lives this way
