Voting is not free. It costs significant time and effort, not just to turn up, but to research and think about how you will vote. And that's just once every few years. Do you really expect people to turn up every saturday and vote in a referendum?

Like I said, voting is an irrational act, if given the choice. You can only support your position by pretending their is no imposition on people.
