The original Bill was rushed through Parliament, with just ONE day for the public to comment. Now the law is being changed again - fines doubled, powers extended - “before it has been properly operationalised, risks responding to a problem that has not yet been clearly diagnosed”

The Senate enquiry Albanese and parents unable to raise their own children are complaining about, gives the opportunity to test evidence, interrogate assumptions and ensure that reforms are proportionate, effective and reliable.

Even the American censor, whom Albanese wants to give more power, has said that she wasn't happy with the legislation “in the first place”.

As for increasing penalties, a 2011 study found that increased penalties do not produce a general increase deterrent-wise.
