When writing first drafts you look for the rhythm and the energy. But mostly it’s a matter of feeling a way forward.

A novelist writing about his craft in a down to earth, none wankeresque way, is refreshing.

I particularly liked his admission that the first draft is unplanned, unsure, but he's mainly seeking rhythm and energy.
