Especially when the current collective consciousness which energises the current system, and its drive to total power and control over everything, is based on the systematic destruction of such a consciousnes.

It takes far more than a few good ideas to turn around the immense momentum of 3000 years of HIS-story.

Every seemingly hopeful new idea and possibility immediately gets whatever truth it represents, sucked out of it, and is immediately coopted into the system----and then sold as another consumer product.

This system is thus described and hyped, especially by so called conservatives via, "you have never had it so good" or you are "living in the best of times"

Agent Smith represented the "human" element of the machine world which via the seemingly unstoppable momentum of the REPLICATING MACHINES, was very rapidly drawing to its CLOSURE POINT extermination of the "under-ground" still very much living-breathing-feeling human beings.

Under the ruling paradigm enforced by all the Agent Smiths there really was nothing that could stop the replicants.

Except a radical change in consciousness signalled and thus transmitted by NEO's conversion drama-experience.

The collective mind that held the machine trance and its relentless power drive in place, thus collapsed.

In our culture agent Smiths are every where, but especially in the form of all the "right"-wing culture war warriors, who via their group-think mind, immediately and altogether ridicule any and every idea such as those presented by Roszak and others. And anything with even a hint of GREEN in it.

Green or gone are the only options.

I don't think the ecological consciousness is the problem. The vast majority of people in developed countries like Australia have the necessary conscousness lying just under the surface. It could be tapped if we could just get the right leader to...um...lead the way.

The great problem is the intimate tangle between government and the big end of town with its vested interests in continuous expansionism, ie; in a continuous very strong momentum away from sustainability.

This sector has got the power to sway governments at all levels to do what they want, by and large. And governments are happy to do it. If governments don't pander to it, they get booted out of office.

This is the great problem. It is why any efforts made towards sustainability that don't address the continuous growth paradigm are just skirting around the edges and doomed to failure.

We are indeed suffering mega-denial by thinking that we can keep on increasing our population, thus increasing the demand on all manner of already highly stressed resources, pushing urban areas into bushland and steadily alienating our ecological heritage.
