For decades, the film industry churned out films about the need for love, peace and just generally getting along. What made them stop?

You have politicised your article with your comment about the 1970's obsession with overpopulation.

Just because they got it wrong then, does not mean they have got it wrong now.

‘1951 film, Klaatu is a sort of Christ-like figure, whose extraterrestrial intervention into human affairs brings about an age of peace.’

Robert Wise, the man who made 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' also made 'The Sound of Music' … about a Christ-like singing nun whose extra-syrupy saccharine intervention into a family run by an authoritarian thug brings about some of the most ghastly songs ever written for a musical.

Perhaps TSOM was about the mainstream apocalyptic environmentalist nightmare of rising sea levels - the moral being: If you make a regular habit (no pun intended) of running up mountains to burst into song, you have a much better chance of surviving.

There are stacks of movies about love, peace and getting along. Try 'I've loved you for so long', 'Australia' and 'Slumdog millionaire' . They have other themes as well--but so do the movies of the 50's and 60's.

It is argued, also, that many of the 50's 'getting along' movies were designed to encourage women to see their fulfillment in the roles of housewives and mothers, and leave jobs to the men. If that is true, those movies were also political.

If you are going to call a set of ideas and the concerns that arise from them 'a cultural obsession', you need first to show that it is held irrationally, that only some cultures share the concerns, and that the reason only some cultures are concerned is that the underlying ideas are culturally relative. Otherwise, it is just a form of swearing.
