Proud, independent people, living lives that would drive soft westerners to despair. Yet they carry on because they have to. Nobody else will help them.

Brian, the picture you so vividly paint rings true with my impressions from living in China for a shorter time and observance from the outside. We need to be patient with President Hu and Premier Wen and encourage their government in everything it tries to do to increase the accountability of local cadres.
