In my opinion, there's nothing so irritating as an author trying to moralise and preach within a novel. There are so many depressing and miserable stories published that I approach a trip to the bookstore with apprehension, wondering if I'll find anything remotely interesting anymore.
There is only so much reflection that I can take, before I want to escape the real world, and get into a story that grips, thrills, or makes me laugh. That, for me, is what reading a novel is all about. Leave the sermonising, moralising, didactic stories for the pulpit.
