Mr. Nelson's strategy has been high risk from the moment Mr. Costello said he would not seek the Opposition leadership. That was probably the only time that Mr. Nelson could have mustered the numbers to take the leadership, and he would have known that his performance had to be perfect from day one to keep it for more than 18 months. He doesn't have the luxury of looking forward enough to be devising strategy for the next election. At the moment it would be taking all his energies to stay alive as Opposition Leader, a battle which he must surely lose at the time of his successor's choosing. Mr. Nelson's strategies are irrelevant now. The real game is between Mr. Turnbull and Mr. Costello. Once that is resolved, perhaps there will be an effective opposition.

The politics of 'climate change' will continue. The lack of credibility by the high priests who claim science backs their doctrine will only be swallowed by the gullible. Thankfully more and more are waking up to the scam.

I think that the highest risk strategy that Nelson and the Libs can undertake is to be seen to be virtually the same philosophically as Labor, in an era when something very different is needed.

The alternative philosophy is out there. The Australian public know what it is and the vast majority support it, if only subconsciously at the moment. With the right promotional regime it could win the opposition overwhelming support.

What is it?

Genuine sustainability. A profound move away from the massive expansionism that has not only been facilitated but greatly increased by Rudd. A much better utilisation of the enormous wealth now flowing into this country to turn our growth addiction around and strive to match the demand created by an affluent population with the supply capability of our resource base an environment. And a bunch of other key sustainability-oriented directives.

Nelson needs to present an image of himself as a great futurist and environmentalist, with the likes of professors Tim Flannery, Clive Hamilton and Ian Low by his side.

He needs to espouse government for the people instead of for big business. He needs to ban political donations, which so profoundly bias government towards the vested interests of big business.

Is this risky? Yes, because there will be strong resistance from within the party and from their big biz mates.

But I reckon it is nowhere near as risky as continuing on with the same old dinosaur tactics….which would mean he (or any subsequent leader) could only ever win power be way of disillusionment with the Rudd crowd, rather than by genuine support for his innovative approach.

Brendan Nelson has no policy. he is just caretaking until the Liberals decide who the next leader is. Will it be Malcolm Turnbull or Julie Bishop or will Peter Costello make the supreme sacrifice?
