Australia can learn from the US policies for high-skilled immigration which fail to meet demands of the 21st century.

An interesting analysis of current worldwide phenomena that many have been somewhat aware of. This article, however, supplies data that supports fears of Americans of important changes. It brought to mind the 1964 release of Bob Dylan, “The Times They Are A-Changing”. The last verse of which is
“The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

High-skilled immigration is certainly better for a country than low-skilled, at least in this day and age, but Jacob Kirkegaard needs to consider whether his solution is making the problem worse. The typical H-1B visa, or its Australian equivalent, is not issued to a genius. There are, in fact, special visa categories for exceptionally talented people. The visa holders depress wages and are often vulnerable to exploitation, since they cannot readily change jobs. The depressed wages, job security, and working conditions discourage local students from going into technological fields, so a vicious circle is set up. See

for a discussion of some of the issues involved.
