By David Flint, published 22/5/2008

The latest news from the 2020 Summit is that the preliminary report of the governance stream has been surreptitiously changed.

What is the point of this drivel?

Prof Flint

I don't share your particular obsession with this issue. However, I do agree that Republicanism is, or should be, a relatively low order governance issue, and its prominence at the 2020 Summit seemed to drown out other matters that deserve more immediate attention, such as the need to improve transparency in government and the state of the federal system. A pity.

So, despite the support among the chosen few, the real people of Australia still do not want, or are not interested in, a republic

But, if records of the talkfest have already been changed surreptitiously, as Professor Flint says, who, apart from the mates of the Government who attended, will ever know what really went on?

As for a republic, it is unnecessary and it is a gross piece of self-indulgence by people more interested in form than substance. If there is to be a republic sometime in the future, it should be brought about by the majority of Australians. It should be ASKED for, not pushed on us by a bunch of elitists.

Certainly we cannot afford to be bullied by hand-picked cronies of the Government who do not, and never will, represent anyone.

I am always amused when those on the "right" prattle on about "elitists".
Who are the real elitists anyway?
The caffe-latte, chardonnay swillers who have no real power to make decisions?

Or those who were invited the garden party put on for George Bush when he was here in Oz a couple of years ago.
That is:
The captains of industry and corporate high fliers, media proprietors, the military men, the usual right wing media hacks, including flint-stone and his lying manipulative mate Mr Jones. Plus cardinals and arch-bishops, especially like mister Pell who lends and advertises his support to the those on the "right" by the company he keeps, the right wing think tanks sponsored by big money where he gives key-note speeches.

And those who are invited to Davos summits to decide the fate of the rest of the world.

Who will live and who will die.

You wont find many "lefties" welcome at such forums.
The purpose of the security for such talk-fests being PRECISELY to keep the hoi-polloi OUT.

Mr. Right,
"the real people of Australia still do not want, or are not interested in, a republic"
What do you say Mr. Right? Are you joking? The real people want to finish with this story the soonest possible.
The real people want an elected head of the state, an Australian citizen and resident, THE REAL PEOPLE WANT TO PUT THE MONARCHY INTO MUSEUM !
We want republic!
