By Michael Lardelli, published 17/3/2008

By the year 2020 we will look back on the summit and the reports it produces as a lost opportunity.

As usual, slogans from outer world are out of reach for locally educated (on merits of local understanding of education, of course), participants.

What could happen in 2020? An ancient slogan says, “Either shah to die, or a donkey to die, or both of them to die.”

Making plans for 2020 is hilarious at least because even Howard hadn’t survived 11 years in office.

The author seems to be under the illusion that the 2020 Summit is about finding solutions. 2020 is a clever political move designed to provide a taxpayer funded thinktank for ALP policy development at a time when the oppposite is still in dissarray.

It also provides a forum for the government to placate some critics by inviting them into the policy formation proccess and identifies future critics that it can then marginalise, discredit or silence before the government is required to go before the people again.

This is a conference designed to keep the ALP in government for at least the next two terms. Rudd knows spin & he knows spin works.
