By Kellie Tranter, published 27/2/2008

Why is culture important? Is it because the cement of social cohesion, like friendship, is the bond of common experiences?

Well said Kellie Tranter and I say “Let’s sing it ALL again’, loudly.

Thank you for all the leads and links to the wider information too. This additional information really helps us to see and understand more the critical importance of ‘why’ our cultural capital is so vital, Australia.

I adored the article, and especially your quote of quotes;

“Identity may be one of the most complex aspects of the Australian equation, yet one of the most important in determining the success of the nation.”

And, it is our acceptance and respect of each other that is priority when it comes to being a proud, inclusively driven, smart nation.

It must be all about us, our nations diversity. This kind of ‘us’ that governments can not manufacture, alone.

Why?

It is up to us to remove the projective fears and listen harder to find greater understanding and balance.

Can we learn to embrace our own empathy and goodwill… know that this thing they call culture;

“…is the driver for productivity, educational discipline, the creation of goals, and the determinant of harmony and happiness.”

Why?

It is the intangible which determines the tangible.’

Thank You, this has been the hardest topic to discuss. The way we relate to others, the role of our inter-relationships in everyday life…. the dire need for RESPECT.

“Why?”

Let us open our hearts and our minds. Culture is I believe, the most consequential issue for Australia process today. How we deal with our own “cultural diversity and difference” will make or break us both in now and future time. Being anything less than Aussie about celebrating it will lead to more under-achievement (school, work and home) and impact most on those already marginal vulnerable sectors.

Cultural diversity is a healthy way to express and receive our humanity together and is a good economic business and a good social strategy to adopt if the people you serve or care about are the center of your frame.
