By Tim Kroenert, published 19/12/2007

Live Earth was an extreme weather event of the global conscience. Now you can buy into the wasteful consumption with a commemorative CD/DVD set.

Does this not ignore the current paradigm of economic behaviour. Consumption equals jobs and profit whatever is consumed. Waste both from production and usage are ignored the loop is open ended.
For years now people like Hawkins and Lovins have been pushing the idea of energy efficiency including the energy embodied in our waste. Germany instituted a method in which producers were responsible for their waste. Other suggestions serogrouping of enterprises such that the waste of one, including heat, could become at least part of the feed stock of the next. Energy used in transport was also thus reduced. There was also the idea of local production rather than centralised. Lovin’s demonstrates this in many cases to be more efficient with less waste, including energy production itself. So we go with solar cells sun heated hot water and as many closed loops of production as we can manage. Factor Four and The Ecology of Commerce spring to mind.

I really cannot understand what conservationists have against plastics. They provide an excellent sink for carbon as they consist primarily of carbon chain polymers. They are for the most part non-biodegradable meaning that the carbon in them is locked up for a very long time. Plastics of all sorts are excellent structural materials thart can be used in the production of advanced fabrics that are more versatile than cotton, wool or hemp. They also could potentially replace many building materials. Plastics are also recyclable which means that we shouldn't need a great deal of replacement of non-renewable resources if they are used properly. If we are to stop clearing land to conserve forests, plastics are the only logical choice as we will no longer be able to grow cotton or hemp or use timber to build houses.
So if you want to stop global warming, use more plastic.

I love the hypocrisy of it all...ps what is Live Earth?

"a worthy cause, given the impending climate crisis"

What climate crisis?

"I've resisted the rise of digital music not only because of reduced sound quality or out of an egalitarian concern for artists' rights. The truth is, I love the CD as an artifact."

How 1980's of you....
