By Peter Olszewski, published 19/12/2007

It is time for the media to permanently embargo the words ‘embargo’ and ‘off the record’.

I find this a little disingenuous and not a little self serving.
The implication that somehow the media is prevented from doing its job of reporting by information restriction is less than candid. Friel and Falk examined the “record of the paper’, and found that in the main reporting was limited to Government had outs and failed to question the Government spin for the period from Vietnam to Iraq. Others go further suggesting that by selection of what to report and the manner of presentation is biased. A view not happenings is reported. This is exemplified in Philo and Berry “Bad News from Israel’ and a more general view of the media desire to report accurately is provided by ‘Guardians of Power. The myth of the Liberal Media’, Edwards and Cromwell. Further back in time there is McLunan and Alex Carey commenting as being less than impressed by the Media.

The media are not only beholden to governments and corporations for the buttering of their bread, but are also "romantically" attached to populism for its ratings. And because of the latter, it often sacrifices the national interest to the godhead of ratings.
