Australia must work creatively with, rather than against, the architecture of the Kyoto Protocol.

Dear Friends Now that we have Progressive Governments in Western Australia and now Federal , Let us all now hope and pray that the infamous Nuclear Power and Nuclear Waste is now long gone and now literally dead and buried never ever will it ever raise it's ugly head again. Those who want to make money from this mineral will do all they can in the West Australian Newspaper moulding and manipulating our minds as they are doing today and the last General election.
Congratulations! After years of solid campaigning by GetUp members and the broader environmental movement, the new Australian government has set in train the process to ratify the Kyoto Protocol - a move unthinkable just one month ago. As we enter international negotiations at Bali, this first critical step sets the stage for Australia to be a world leader, not an international pariah.
The power of sustained grassroots campaigning has never been more apparent, and with your help we will continue to set the agenda. Last week we asked GetUp members around the country to host Vision GetTogethers and over 200 hosts in 100 electorates have already stepped up.
But we want to make sure every GetUp member in every electorate has a chance to participate - so we still need more hosts. Hosting is easy: All you need to do is choose a venue - whether it's a local pub, cafe, community hall, or even your own living room. So click below to host, or if there's already a GetTogether near you, you can now RSVP to attend.

Here's the plan: meet with other local GetUp members next Tuesday, December 11, to discuss and prioritise your vision for GetUp and for the new Parliament. Your vision will set GetUp's campaign agenda - and will be delivered to every MP before Parliament sits early next year.
Why? Because every single Member of Parliament needs to know where you stand on the issues before they head to Canberra. And every single member needs to know that you will be there holding them accountable when they come back.

The article has nothing to do with nuclear energy and everything to do with setting emission targets beyond 2012.

As the developing world (non OECD) countries emissions now equal the developed world (OECD) and are growing at 4x the rate, any emission treaty not including targets for the developing world is not worth the paper it is printed on.

By 2050 the developing world will emit more CO2 than the entire world today. The 30% savings in the developed world will mean that emissions in 2050 will be about 135% of emissions today.

Robyn Eckersley sounds like a well meaning and ethical person in trying exclude the less developed countries from emissions targets until they reach a certain level, but it is like saying the less developed countries can hunt whales until their people are no longer hungry. The developed countries would feel good about not killing whales, but whales would still be dead.

The path to hell is paved with good intentions.

This presentation of C&C [links below] may help to clarify the commentary on Robin Eckersley's article.

It includes the Hadley 'coupled carbon cycle models' which make it clear that emissions need to go down to nearly net-zero by 2050/60. The C&C component assumes the fossil fuel contect of emissions against the back-drop of all emissions, as per the Hadely coupled carbon-cycle modelling.

The 'coupled 450 ppmv Hadley' is mouse-touch sensitive for emphasis on 'touch'.

The 'carbon-arithmetic' counting this in the animation is at: -
