Optimising the resources boom means smarter planning : Comments

By Robin Batterham, published 19/11/2007

We need to move our thinking paradigm from 'me' to 'us' and work for the longer term to make the best of this once-in-a-generation resources boom.

We need infrastructure. In particular we need the proposed railway from Melbourne to Darwin, and Darwin needs to be developed as a major shipping port. Then every railway in Eastern Australia which presently heads to coastal ports could reverse their direction and send goods inland and north to Asia. When oil becomes too expensive for road transport our trains could once more burn coal, or diesel derived from coal. Ships using Darwin would have closer access to Asia and be more cost effective.
