By Ian Mott, published 19/9/2007

The official Beattie spin v the truth: he implied a clearing Armageddon had taken place and the marching hordes of demon salinity were at the gate.

With salinity it is far better to act preventatively rather than try to fix it after it is apparent, at such time, it is virtually unrepairable. I haven't travelled much but I have seen salinity alongside the Bruce Highway (Qld)and around Rockhampton. Knowing the extent of the damage in the Murray - Darling, any scare tactics seem warranted if we want to preserve this poor ancient land for future generations.

I don't know this area but I agree with the proposal that envirocrats have episodes of groupthink which then become gospel. Any criticism is taken as heresy. Other examples are willow poisoning along the Murray Darling and the current fad by which trees are supposed to be supercharged carbon offsets. If average rainfall is declining over much of Australia that alone will lower the water table (and subsoil salinity) regardless of tree cover. Since envirocrats and Premiers have shown themselves to be less than honest everything they say must be checked.

So Stanners has a mind capable of excusing deliberate lies to the policy process as long as the scare story is a plausible one and the stated objective is cool enough? For the record, the Condamine IS part of the Murray-Darling, Stanners, and the so-called "damage" from salinity has been there for centuries.

Your views on the irreparability of saline land are also incredibly ignorant. There are numerous examples all over Queensland where the 1942 and 1953 aerial photos show saline outbreaks that were much larger then than they are today. There is a good example only a few km from the Bruce Highway at Miriamvale. One 60 hectare "outbreak" on the Darling Downs has almost completely disappeared.

The ease with which you are willing to excuse criminal conspiracy is breathtaking.
