Jose Ramos Horta is fairly predictable, playing himself and representing vested interests rather than the Maubere whom he privately despises as ignorant natives.

Lu Olo issued an interesting statement declaring his pecuniary interests,

· He does not have any savings or other holdings in any bank accounts.
· His family owns traditional land and a residence in which his extended family reside in Ossu, Viqueque district. He owns no other house or land in Timor-Leste or anywhere else in the world.
· He owns a motor vehicle being a Toyota Prado, 4 WD which he has had since 2000 valued at approximately USD$5,000.00.
· He owns some basic furniture which comprise part of the furnishings in his official state-owned residence as President of Parliament, in Farol, Dili.
· His only source of income is his position as President of Parliament.
· He does not own any shares in any business or company operating in Timor-Leste or anywhere else in the world.
· He has no commercial interests or business partners in Timor-Leste or anywhere else in the world.
· He has no interests in any trust, superannuation fund or managed investment scheme in Timor-Leste or anywhere else in the world.

It will be educational if Horta also files a statement. I don't know what he did with his windfall from his Nobel Laureate.
And I don't imagine that Xanana Gusmao and his Australian wife will be too keen to declare theirs either.

I agree with you Tim, the way the elections were covered and how consequent withholding of election results from the eastern, Fretilin-dominated regions was broadly accepted by journalists was a disgrace.
There was, however, a few dissenting voices who simply wanted the results. One I might say is John Martinkus, a veteran of Timorese affairs since 1994. However, alone among Australian media outlets to take a couple of pieces from him was Queensland's The Courier Mail.
SBS, who employed Martinkus at the time, weren't interested and in fact suggested he 'go for someone else'.
Al-Jazeera was interested.
Ain't it a shame Australia's neighbours' affairs are only of interest in its mainstream media when it involves a blatant whitewash of the truth by Dfat and its associated spooks?
