Convenience of teachers or education of children? : Comments

By Des Treacy, published 4/4/2007

The main problems with education are not lack of funds, flawed pre-teacher education, rationalisation of curricula, et al, it’s the system!

People need to understand how bureaucracies work in order to improve any system, and this article highlights some of the real factors involved. However no method of enforcing any such change is mentioned.

A possible one could be:

1. No person can occupy the position of Premier of NSW unless they have school age children.

2. That person shall, as a condition of remaining premier, cause his school age children to be educated at the public school nominated by the Leader of the Opposition. Such nomination can be changed at intervals of six months.

Many other such solutions to current problems are available. Another example is how to fix public transport:

3. All members of the NSW Parliament, on pain of forfeiting their seat and being ineligible for re-election, shall undertake all official travel within NSW by regularly scheduled public transport.

I had better stop now, as the flying pigs are becoming too numerous.

plerdsus,

I like the way you think.

May I suggest a refinement? All members of a state parliament who have school age children must send them to a public school within their constituency. The school is to be nominated by the leader of the opposition if a government member, or by the premier of the state if an opposition member

Stephany,

I am glad we think alike. The only defect I would find in your proposal is that within a very short time the only candidates offered by any party would be those without children.

It reminds me of a sample ballot paper from the days when the candidates were listed in alphabetical order:

AARDVARK, John, ALP
AARONS, James, Lib
ABERNATHY, Sylvia, Dem
ZECHARIAH, Jason, Greens

At least we have moved on from those days.
