Our public health system has fallen victim to the "propaganda" of the last 20 years that only the private sector can do things well and "efficiently". A lot of people support this, even when it is not in their own interest. The adaptation of corporate style management has had a destructive effect on the public health system with a group of "management and governance experts" riding roughshod over those trying to do the work. This has been a disastrous overreaction to any perceived inefficiencies in the old public health system which now suffers from shortage of staff (including all those dreadful non frontline staff) and increased nastiness and non cooperation between staff because of the competitive situation created by unrealistic benchmarks and deadlines.
