The geological evidence shows there have been large fluctuations in global temperature and sea level long before mass industrialisation occurred. At the end of the last ice-age ~20,000 years ago, I believe the oceans were 100 metres lower, but it is also known that in warm phases of the earth’s history when there were no ice caps ocean levels were much higher.
So even though we can’t address the causes, we can correct they symptoms. If ocean levels rise in the short term they could be contained by engineering works but if the global temp rose a lot and there was increased melting of the Antarctic, then there would come a point where coastal settlements would have to be abandoned.
So of course we should take action, just because we can’t affect the cause doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to ameliorate the consequences.
Cheers
