It may be difficult for some to acknowledge, but the most successful opponent of Pauline Hanson was Queensland premier Peter Beattie. In 1998 One Nation shook up the political establishment in Queensland by winning seats from both the ALP and Coalition achieving 23% of the primary vote in the process. Beattie clawed his way back from minority government to a landslide victory at the next election in 2001. If anyone knows how to curtail One Nation, Peter Beattie must surely be someone to listen to.

He acknowledged that One Nation supporters are hardworking, decent Australians, disillusioned with the major political parties, concerned with where Australia is heading and that they are not being listened to or even included. One Nation echoes their concerns, always complaining but unable to offer any real solutions.

So how did he address that? Beattie took face-to-face cabinet meetings into the community and listened to people, developed policies and initiatives that dealt with their concerns. It worked, because Beattie won the next election in a landslide.

And therein lies the solution. Major parties must stop doing what they have always done because we the people are sick of getting what we have always got. That’s the definition of madness and self-destruction. Political elites across the spectrum show no signs of waking up to that.

Angus Taylor is right, when he said, One Nation are "incapable of governing", take one look at the capability of those One Nation members sitting in the Federal Parliament today, Hanson, Joyce, Roberts, Farley, is that the ON Brains Trust, and a ON government would need another 25 or so totally incompetent, want-a-be's of lesser calibre as ministers running complex government departments. They would make Jim Hacker look like Winston Churchill. Anyway, the One Nation monkeys are sitting on a powder keg playing with a box of matches, and its two years before the next election, a lot can happen in politics in that time.
