By Chris Lewis, published 24/6/2026

Australia needs foreign workers, but what lessons can we learn from other countries with large worker populations, like Singapore?

Hi Chris, good article.

The positive side to "zero" migration, as ttbn would have by saying; "immigration should be zero" would be a reduction in housing demand, and a decrease in urban congestion, little else, oh and some cockeyed nonsense about a monoculture. On the negative side it would lead to an ageing population, a skill shortage in critical areas such as health, an economic recession reducing government services through reduced taxation income. In the short term government would increase borrowings, in an attempt to maintain necessary services, but in the long term debt servicing would see government services such as aged pension cut dramatically, less money more Old Farts.

As for Singapore, it's heavily reliant on a high proportion of working-age immigrants, who make up a significant share of the population. The migration rate is around 2.2% of population, with immigrants and non-residents making up 48.7% of the total population. Australia has a migration rate of 1.2% with about 13% non-citizens.

I wouldn't compare Australia with Singapore, it certainly is chalk and cheese. Singapore could be described as a authoritarian regime run by the Peoples Action Party (One Nation) for the past 67 years.

Upon taking a closer look at Singapore would reveal that there aren't any immigrants at all, most of the workers are guest workers who eventually leave the Nation again. Immigrants stay in many countries but not in Singapore. Just like in the UAE.
Only Western Governments let themselves be fooled. Poland is on the right path ! Ireland's taking the first steps & others are getting their glasses cleaned to see what's actually going on.
They're starting to realise that wrongly placed empathy is akin to self-destruction !
