Universities have discovered their ideal academic: a machine that believes nothing, has read everything, and can produce infinite quantities of fluent slop on demand. And they have offered it tenure.

Excellent article.

It is sad how quickly universities have lost sight of their true purpose and responsibilities. The article touches on some of the things that have made this possible - grade inflation and the “credential factory” ethos, but above all the lost recognition that it is the process of learning, not the outputs of the educated, that is the purpose of an education. Learning how to think rigorously, assemble and analyse information and articulate an argument is not just a means to an end, but an end in itself.

I’m not against AI. Today’s student will have to live with it for all their working lives and should be taught how to use it responsibly. But human intelligence is a precious gift that needs to be nurtured.
