The one word missing from the budget : Comments

By Graham Young, published 18/5/2026

There is one factor driving or worsening Australia's economic position. People are marching in the street about it. The treasurer couldn't even mention it.

I remember that before the last US election Elon Musk had his two point plan- reduce government spending and red tape. Since then I've seen this simple idea in different contexts.

I've come to the belief that PM Albanese has been trying to create a war between the generations (generational reform/ intergenerational fairness) in order to distract us from his inability to simply "control government spending and red tape". I believe that 'the generations' should see through this bait and switch and throw Albanese out.

No amount of intergenerational fairness is going to improve things, if Albo doesn't have the discipline to control government spending. Everyone has to budget- individuals, in families,...

Leadership can be used to coordinate efforts- to root out inefficiencies- so money goes further.

You can't tax your way to prosperity. You produce your way to prosperity- you work out how to produce more with less- modularize and standarize process and materials- stockpile highly volatile goods- buy durable goods (cost a little more but last a lot longer). You minimize your expenses (and you constantly review where you can cut costs- buy in bulk- make a cake rather than buy a cake, bring coffee rather than buy coffee, etc), you maximize your income, you invest a proportion, when you do this well you can have some small luxuries. Sometimes you need to find a substitute for inflated commodities (I've stopped buying chocolate- or Fruit and Veg from the major chains ($8 for a kg of potatos)- so much for "The Fresh Food People").

But advise can't help fools- all you can do is stay out of the way of their destruction- and so we return to Albo.

GY said "I can’t see any reason why immigrants should accept mass migration any more than anyone else. If the only way an economy can grow is via an immigration Ponzi, then how are we ever to produce enough houses for their kids to buy (or anything else)? Increasing standards of living will continue to be a mirage."

Answer- Yes mass migration isn't good for anyone. It's just another example of trying to live outside your means. Ideally you should produce what you use. If you try to live off credit, you think you've got more money, but it's a 'stupidity tax'. Some say we need mass immigration for our economy- no it's a tax- we need to train our own people- we need to produce what we use. When we are good at living within our means, we can help our neighboring friendly nations to do the same. Then they will be more prosperous too, and less a slave of their own management.

Hi Paul,

My apologies. Don't let me put you off your satire. The world needs more of it.
